The results of the Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) Exam 2019 have been declared this year. The examination is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for staff recruitment to the Government of India’s different ministries, departments and organisations. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in any discipline can appear for the examination.

Edugraph caught up with Abhishek Kumar who secured the All-India Rank (AIR) 26 in SSC CGL 2019. He shared his journey to success and urged civil service candidates to consider SSC CGL as a viable first step in their careers.

Kumar shared that he had always been interested in working as a civil servant. During the last year of his graduation in Physics, he decided to start preparing for the SSC CGL examination. Where most civil service aspirants focus on the highly competitive Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Kumar decided that the SSC CGL would be a good first step that was well within his reach.

“We had always been told that the SSC CGL exam is a mini-IAS exam. Just like the UPSC exam, cracking SSC CGL offers stability, good income and respect as well. There is also the opportunity for vertical movement through experience and examinations which can eventually lead to becoming a gazetted officer,” Kumar said.

He highlighted that most people are aware of the UPSC exam but few know about the SSC CGL examination. Kumar suggested that UPSC aspirants should consider appearing for the SSC CGL exam first. Candidate who are able to secure a job through SSC CGL can continue preparing for the UPSC exam while having a stable job.

Speaking about his preparation for the exam, Kumar shared that he first gained an understanding of the exam format and then he gathered study material and the previous year's question papers to help prepare. Soon he realised that opting for preparatory classes would be a big help.

Enrolling with Unacademy, he was taught and mentored by the star educators of the online learning platform. “Unacademy provided a study routine that included classes on topics, revision and mock tests. They had a comprehensive plan ready for us. We also appeared for practice tests which gave us an estimation of the AIR that we could secure with our level of preparedness. All of this helped me get a better AIR than what I was expecting,” Kumar shared.

“Those who are interested in giving the SSC CGL exam should start with the previous year's question papers. Going through them will give them an idea of what the exam entails,” said Kumar, “If the candidates feel that the exam is something they can tackle then they can start studying the standard study material for the exam.” He added that enrolling for competitive exam preparation classes under reputable educators offers candidates much-needed guidance.
