23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have about 4,600 open faculty seats. The IITs have been asked to conduct a mission-mode special recruitment drive to fill the positions, the Ministry of Education (MoE) informed the Rajya Sabha in a written response on Wednesday.
According to the data sent by the MoE to Rajya Sabha, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur have the highest number of vacant faculty positions at 517 and 798 respectively. India’s top-ranked IIT Madras have around 482 vacant positions for faculty. Over 300 faculty vacancies are empty in the following IITs: ISM-Dhanbad- 446; IIT Roorkee - 419; IIT Kanpur - 382 and IIT Guwahati - 307. The oldest IIT in the country, IIT Delhi have the lowest number of vacancies lying empty which is 52. IIT Tirupati and Palakkad have 15 and 27 vacant positions respectively under the new IITs. All in all, 4596 vacancies are lying vacant in IITs.
Subhas Sarkar, Ministry of State in the Ministry of Education said in reply to the report, ‘Filling up of vacancies is a continuous process and IITs issue rolling advertisements, which are open throughout the year for all candidates, who fulfill the required qualifications and experience for faculty positions in IITs. The Ministry of Education has requested all IITs to fill up the vacancies in the faculty cadre through a Special Recruitment Drive in Mission Mode and most of the IITs have initiated the process.’
