The Faculty of Science at St Xavier’s University Kolkata, in collaboration with the St Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association, ignited a two day intellectual firestorm on March 22 and 23, 2024, with a dynamic workshop on Cyber Security.
Aimed at strengthening students' comprehension of contemporary cyber security frameworks, the event focussed on a spectrum of topics including the landscape overview, cyber attack taxonomy, ethical hacking, security mechanisms, cryptography, ISO standardisation and real world case studies of cyber assaults.
Inaugurating the event, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Reverend Dr A Arockiasamy, SJ, underscored the pressing importance of cyber security in our modern times.
The curtain rose with luminaries from law enforcement: Sambiti Chakraborty, Asst Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate; Monotosh Raj, Sub-Inspector of Police (CID), West Bengal; Sk Tajuddin, Sub-Inspector of Police; and Ajoy Ganguly, Cyber Security Expert, Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, Cyber Crime Police Station. Monotosh Raj's illuminating speech dissected the multifaceted causes of cyber crime, while Sk Tajuddin and Ajoy Ganguly shared gripping case studies with the audience, discussing problematic techniques such as SMS bombing, Call Bombing and Fake Loan schemes. Sambiti Chakraborty underscored the dual drivers of fear and allure as catalysts for cybercrime.

The academic feast continued with Dr Mrinmoyee Bhattacharya, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, demystifying the intricacies of Cryptography. The finale featured Malay Mitra, IT Coordinator at St Xavier’s University, unravelling real world case studies encompassing database servers, Linux servers, proxy servers and basic firewall configurations.

Day two commenced with Anand Raje, Co-founder and Director of BASIS Technologies Pvt Ltd and Co-founder of CTO India Internet Foundation, imparting wisdom on The Evolving Realm of Cyber Security. Dr Sayan Das, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, led a rivetting session on A Brief Insight of Cyber Attack.

The event achieved an outstanding dimension with insights from Avishek Raychoudhury, Scientific Officer 'SB’ at the Standardisation of Testing and Quality Certification (STQC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), GoI. His speech outlined the nuances of vulnerability, the cyber landscape, recent attacks and the CIA Triad.

The workshop culminated in a vibrant exchange of questions, followed by a vote of thanks from Dr Tuhin Utsab Paul, Head of the Department of Computer Science, and a valedictory session. Needless to add, the workshop served as an enriched source of knowledge equipping all the participants to navigate the digital frontier with confidence!
