In a moment of great pride, students from the Heritage Institute of Technology Kolkata (HITK), were felicitated by the Honourable President of India, Droupadi Murmu, for their remarkable achievement in Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon 2024.
The team, including students from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, secured the prestigious second position nationwide. The felicitation took place at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, during the inaugural celebration of National Space Day on August 23, 2024, marking the success of India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission.
The Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon, a 30-hour event, was organised by ISRO in association with Innovation Partner Hack2skill; and was held at the national level for the first time. The competition attracted 3,062 registrations from premier engineering institutes across India, including IITs and NITs. After a rigorous selection process, only the top 30 teams made it to the Grand Finale, held at the National Remote Sensing Centre, Hyderabad, on August 13-14, 2024.
In the final round, participants faced a challenging problem statement focused on the ‘Automatic Detection of craters & boulders from an Orbiter High resolution camera using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Techniques’. The students’ team from Heritage Institute of Technology, named Team Lusine, showcased their expertise and secured the runner-up position.
Team Lusine included Sambit Mallick (BTech - Electronics & Communication Engineering, Final Year), Snigdha Paul (BTech - Electronics & Communication Engineering, Final Year), Chitradeep Saha (BTech - Electronics & Communication Engineering, Final Year), and Aishik Paul (BTech - Electronics & Communication Engineering, 3rd Year). The team’s success was guided by the mentorship of Professor Anindya Sen and Dr Soumyo Chatterjee from the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering at Heritage Institute of Technology Kolkata.

This recognition is a significant milestone for the Heritage Institute of Technology Kolkata, being the only institute from Eastern India to achieve such a feat at a national level in this competition. It further strengthens the institute’s commitment to nurturing talent and encouraging excellence in technological innovation.
