The IEM-UEM Group announced with profound grief the passing of its Chancellor and Founder, Prof Dr Satyajit Chakrabarti, on December 19, 2024. A pioneering figure in Indian education and engineering, Dr Chakrabarti's visionary leadership transformed the academic landscape, leaving an indelible legacy.
Born in 1947, Dr Chakrabarti's illustrious academic journey began with a B Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the Regional Engineering College (now NIT), Durgapur. He pursued advanced studies at IIT Kharagpur, earning an M Tech, followed by a PhD from Burdwan University and an MBA from Missouri University, USA.
Dr Chakrabarti’s career spanned both industry and academia. After serving as Chief of SAIL’s Western Region and as Vice President of BAICORP in New York, he returned to India in 1994. His tenure as Director of the Institute of Engineering & Management (IEM) revolutionized technical education, paving the way for the establishment of the IEM-UEM Group in 1989.
As the founder of the University of Engineering & Management (UEM), Dr Chakrabarti emphasised human values, discipline, and innovation. He seamlessly blended traditional Indian values with modern Western pedagogy, creating a unique educational ethos.
A distinguished researcher, Dr Chakrabarti contributed to fields such as robotics, alternate fuels, and aviation. His work earned accolades like the IETE Gold Medal and the Edupreneur Award from MHRD.
Professor Dr Satyajit Chakrabarti’s legacy will continue to inspire, and shaping generations of learners and educators.
