Officers suspect they had hanged themselves at least two days ago. Neighbours alerted the police after a stench emanated from the flat belonging to Ranjit Shaw, who stays elsewhere in the city.

Officers from South Port police station went to the flat but found it locked from inside. On breaking it open, the cops found the two hanging from a fan. They did not find any suicide note.

“A preliminary inquiry suggests they had fled their homes in Rajasthan as their families did not approve of their relationship. Kaloya, who had earlier worked in Dubai as a driver, had met Ranjit Shaw there,” said an officer in Lalbazar.

Kaloya and Lal had fled to Kolkata and sought help from Shaw, who allowed them to stay at his flat temporarily, Shaw has told the police.

Metro could not contact the families of the deceased.

An unnatural death case has been started at South Port police station.
