Protesters demanding more trains disrupted services at Khanyan, Palandu and Pandua stations in Hooghly on Monday. They reportedly pelted stones at a train at Khanyan.

They also urged passengers to join them. An agitator said, “The dearth of trains has left passengers panicking as they shoved each other to board trains, often leading to accidents.”

Services have been curtailed for a few days due to the ongoing work on a stretch of tracks, a railway official said.

“The police are trying to convince the agitators to lift their protest,” he added.

Rescued from water tank

A man who had climbed to the top of a water tank, almost 100 feet from the ground, and refused to come down, was rescued after more than three hours on Sunday evening. Police said a few people spotted him standing on the tank near Howrah station around 5.30pm. Fire brigade officials, who arrived at the spot, tried to convince him to come down, the police said.
