A 56-year-old man allegedly stabbed his wife to death on a busy Kankurgachi road in northeast Kolkata on Tuesday evening apparently over a conjugal dispute, police said.
The accused, a driver by profession, went to the local police station at night and confessed to his crime, the police said.
The incident happened on Kankurgachi Road around 8.15pm, the police said.
Babi Bakuli, 50, who suffered multiple stab wounds on her neck, was taken to a private hospital along EM Bypass, where she was declared dead. Her husband Uttam Bakuli, 56, a driver by profession, was unemployed, the police said.
“He fled the spot after stabbing his wife multiple times. We received a complaint from the couple’s son Abhishek, who alleged his father had killed his mother. But before we could launch a search for the man, Uttam stepped into the police station and surrendered,” said an officer of Phoolbagan police station.
Deputy commissioner (eastern suburban division) Priyabrata Roy said Uttam had also brought with him the knife with which he had killed his wife and told the officers present at the police station that he had consumed poison.
Uttam was taken to a private hospital, where doctors confirmed he had consumed insecticide. He is being treated at the hospital, the police said.
A murder case has been started against him. Once the accused is fit enough to be discharged, legal action will be taken against him, said a police officer.
