North Bengal University vice-chancellor Omprakash Mishra extended the tenure of the registrar and the finance officer of the varsity for four months on Friday, a day ahead of the completion of his own tenure.
The decision, he said, was made to avoid any impasse at the varsity. “They will continue to function till a new regular registrar and finance officer are appointed or for a period of another four months, whichever is earlier,” said Mishra.
When the tenure of the registrar and the finance officer had ended earlier this year, the institution had faced problems in disbursing salaries. This is because the finance officer is also the drawing and disbursing authority at the varsity.
In March this year, Mishra was posted in the VC’s post for an interim period for the third time. His tenure will end on Saturday.
Sources said the 73rd executive council and a meeting of the university court were held on Thursday.
At the EC meeting, the decision to implement the international visiting professors' scheme was approved.
“Scholars and academics who would render their services in an honorary capacity will be invited. So far, the names of 112 intentionally renowned professors and academics were approved. Among them are 34 academics from foreign institutes, 11 professors from the USA and three from the UK,” a source said.
The EC has also approved the establishment of the NBU Centre for Strategy and Regional Security, in collaboration with the Indian army and paramilitary forces like the BSF and the CRPF.
