Several private schools ended their month-long summer vacation this week with online classes and the familiar problems — like patchy network — came back in many cases.
Some schools started on Monday and some others on Tuesday.
Several schools that have extended their vacation are planning extra classes by working on Saturdays to make up for the loss of the academic days.
About a fortnight ago, the government asked all schools to extend their summer vacation and reopen from June 15 because of the searing heat.
Schools like the La Martiniere schools, Loreto House, The Heritage School, Indus Valley World School, Julien Day schools began this week with online classes.
“The familiar technical glitches remained like students’ voice cracked while they were answering. There was a point when the teacher’s screen was not clearly visible to the students,” said Souvic Jati, academic coordinator for Classes IX and X at The Heritage School.
Problems like the video switching off because of an unstable network and working parents with children in primary sections having to make arrangements remained.
Some schools will continue with online classes this week and some others conduct them for two or three days. They plan to resume in-person classes either from June 15 or 16.
“We have installed Wi-fi on all floors so that teachers can take online classes from school. But on Tuesday the system crashed and there was a disruption for 30 minutes,” said Terence John, principal, Julien Day School Kalyani.
Teachers of South City International School conducted a meeting to decide the course of action after the school reopens for in-person classes on June 15. “Instead of conducting online classes, we have decided to work on Saturday to compensate for the three days,” said principal John Bagul.
St James’ School which was scheduled to reopen on Monday deferred it by a week. The school will now reopen on June 19.
“We will work for one or two Saturdays in June and July. Despite a couple of showers, it is still sultry,” said Terence Ireland, principal of St James’ School.
Rammohan Mission High School has decided to work on the second, fourth and fifth (when available) Saturdays till at least December. “We missed classes before the summer vacation and even now. This routine (working on Saturday) will be for Class VII upwards. If there is a holiday on Saturday that would be exempted,” said principal Sujoy Biswas.
