Three teachers at a city school started a walk on Monday to uphold gender equality, good health, zero hunger and other sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

The teachers of The Heritage School started the 24-hour walk “Chol Hetey Chol” at 2pm from their campus in Anandapur and will be joined by students from several other schools on the second leg of the walk on Tuesday.

The students of each school will carry placards on any two or more sustainable development goals.

“We have integrated into our curriculum the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG) adopted by the UN. To spread awareness among the youth about the goals we have taken the initiative to organise the walk, which will focus on the aims of SDG to ‘promote prosperity while protecting the planet’,” said Seema Sapru, principal, The Heritage School.

The three teachers — Akash Basu, Sourav Dutta and Bhagyadhar Pahar — will walk non-stop for 24 hours.

After walking through EM Bypass, Jessore Road, BT Road, Central Avenue and some other parts of the city, the teachers are scheduled to reach Park Street on Tuesday morning.

The three teachers are walking at their pace.

“One of the objectives is to tell students that it is up to us to save our planet. If not every day and not for long distances, we can try and walk short distances instead of always taking our car,” said sports and English teacher Akash Basu.

As the teachers stop in one school, students of that school will join the teachers and walk with them till the next school. In the next school, a fresh group of students will join the teachers.

Some of the participating schools are Sushila Birla Girls’ School, Delhi Public School Ruby Park, The BSS School, Dolna Day School, Birla High School and Shri Shikshayatan School.

The students of Sushila Birla Girls’ School have chosen to raise awareness about “zero hunger” and “climate action”.

“Our children come from privileged homes and hence it becomes important that they understand that there are many who are without food,” said principal Koeli Dey.

“As for climate action, they are seeing that it is winter and yet not cold enough. Perhaps talking about it with students of other schools would make them more aware,” said Dey.

The BSS School has chosen gender equality and good health and well-being as their goals.

“Being a girls’ school, we chose gender equality. Our girls will speak about how no girl in a family should be left behind or is less important. A woman can shoulder all kinds of responsibilities, be it at home or outside, and that makes her more versatile,” said principal Sunita Sen.
