Suranjan Das ended his nine-year stint as the vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University on Wednesday.
Das, who turned 65 on June 23, 2019, was reappointed the same year after the Assembly passed a bill raising the retirement age of vice-chancellors from 65 to 70.
He could not serve the entire five-year period because governor C.V. Ananda Bose, the chancellor of state universities, did not extend his tenure beyond May 31.
Das, a former VC of Calcutta University, will take over as VC of a private University on June 1.
“When I joined Jadavpur University, there was considerable trouble on the campus. I could address that campus trouble with the support of broad sections of the university community. As a result, during my tenure, Jadavpur University excelled in academics and attained new heights, as evident in the NIRF and other rankings,” Das told Metro.
“I have done my best to fulfil the trust that had been reposed by the government and the then chancellor when they appointed me as the VC at a very difficult time”.
