The council official said that while sticking to the decision that a student has to score at least 30 per in each of the four semesters, they have introduced the supplementary system so a student could avoid a year’s loss by clearing the backlog

The state higher secondary council will allow a candidate who fails to score 30 per cent (pass marks) in a paper in one semester to write a supplementary test along with the papers of the subsequent semester to clear the backlog.

For example, a student who fails to score 30 per cent (pass marks) in a paper in the first semester will get a chance to write a supplementary test along with the second semester papers.

The council, which had earlier said a student was required to score at least 30 per cent (pass marks) in each paper in the two semesters together in a year (first and second semesters in Class XI and third and fourth semesters in Class XII), last week decided that a student in the segmented plus-II course has to score at least 30 per cent in every paper in each of the four semesters.

The council official said that while sticking to the decision that a student has to score at least 30 per in each of the four semesters, they have introduced the supplementary system so a student could avoid a year’s loss by clearing the backlog.

“A student who will fail to obtain the pass marks in a paper in the first semester will get a chance to write a supplementary test in the second semester to clear the paper in which he or she has failed. The schools assigned to conduct first and second-semester examinations, will make arrangements to hold the supplementary examination along with the second semester,” said Priyadarshini Mallick, the council secretary.

“Once a student manages to clear the first and second semesters, then he will be able to enrol for the third semester (Class XII). Again if a student fails to score the pass marks in the third semester, the candidate will be allowed to write a supplementary examination along with the fourth semester”.

A student will be tested on multiple-choice questions in the first semester
and short-answer and descriptive questions in the second semester.

A similar pattern will be followed in the third and fourth semesters, the examination of which will be conducted by the council.

The council will come up with the exam regulations which will contain the details of the pass marks and the supplementary system next week.

In a lab-based subject, a student has to write a theory paper of 35 marks in each semester.

In non-lab subjects, the papers will be of 40 marks in each semester.

A student has to score at least 10.05 in a theory paper in each semester in a lab-based subject, said a council official.

In non-lab-based papers, the pass marks will be 12.

“If a student fails to score 10.05 in a theory paper in the first semester, he has to score as much in the supplementary examination which will coincide with the second semester,” said a council official.
