The state higher secondary council on Thursday announced that the first and third semesters of the new HS course will require at least 100 hours of classroom teaching.
The second and fourth semesters will have 80 hours of classroom teaching.
The plus-II course in the schools that follow the curricula of the state HS council will be of four semesters from the academic session starting this year.
For a lab-based subject, a student will have to write a theory paper of 35 marks each in the first and second semesters. The practical exam, which will be held once a year, will be of 30 marks.
An identical pattern will be followed in the third and fourth semesters as well.
For the non-lab-based subjects, the theory papers in each year will be of 80 marks and the project work of 20 marks.
“Students have to write theory papers of 40 marks in each semester and submit project work of 20 marks once a year,” HS council president Chiranjeeb Bhattacharya said.
A student has to score at least 30 per cent in the theory papers in the two semesters together in each year to qualify. For the practical exams and project work, too, the cut-off is 30 per cent.
“We have prepared a general policy about the contact hours (hours of classroom teaching). A hundred contact hours will be for the first semester. Eighty will be allocated for the second semester. Twenty contact hours will be set aside for remedial classes, tutorial classes and home assignments. We are implementing the semester system in accordance with the state education policy 2023,” Bhattacharya said.
The council on Thursday uploaded the syllabus of each subject, along with the question pattern, on its website.
The exams in the first and third semesters will be entirely based on multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The third-semester answer scripts will be evaluated through a computerised system.
In the second and fourth semesters, the students will be tested on short answer and descriptive questions.
The council will conduct the exams in the third and fourth semesters, which the students will write at away centres (not in their respective schools), the council president said.
“The council will issue admit cards before the third semester exams. This will be valid for the fourth semester exams, too,” he said.
The duration of the tests in the first, second and third semesters will be one-and-a-half hours. The fourth-semester exams will be of two hours.
“The syllabi in the science subjects have been modelled on the NCERT curricula so our students can perform well in the JEE Main and other such exams,” said Bhattacharya.
