The candidates who were among the top 2 lakh in the JEE Main were allowed to write the JEE Advanced, which was held on June 4.

There are seven zones. Only 37 candidates from the IIT Kharagpur zone featured in the top 500.

The corresponding figures for the zones under the IITs in Hyderabad, Delhi and Bombay are 174, 120 and 103, respectively.

Among the too 100, only five candidates are from the IIT Kharagpur zone, compared with 40 in the IIT Hyderabad zone, 22 in the IIT Bombay zone and 20 in the IIT Delhi zone.

Altogether, 4,618 candidates have qualified from the IIT Kharagpur zone.

“Qualifying from the IIT Kharagpur zone does not necessarily mean that a candidate will take enrollment in IIT Kharagpur,” said an official at the institute.

“A successful candidate from any zone can enrol in IIT Kharagpur. To attract bright students, IIT Kharagpur had in 2021 introduced Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Scholarship, which will cover the tuition and hostel expenses of an IIT Kharagpur student if he or she is among the top 100 on the JEE Advanced merit list,” the official said.

The government has announced the schedule for counselling and seat allotment of the students who have qualified in the JEE Advanced. The counselling registration will be held from June 19 to 28. Several rounds of counselling will be held.
