A handful of students in CBSE schools have opted for improvement tests in Classes X and XII.

Teachers said most students prefer to move on after completing their board exams rather than going through the syllabus again.

They gave the board exams in March. An improvement test would mean studying the whole syllabus seriously again.

The students who appeared for the Class X exams started Class XI in April and are now studying the syllabus of that grade.

Class XII students are more focused on competitive exams and college admission applications, teachers said. Returning to school books at this stage would not be easy.

The CBSE Class X and XII results were announced on May 12. Applications for re-tests started on June 1 and will end on June 17.

“The Class X students have completed a portion of the Class XI syllabus and are preparing for periodic tests. They would rather move ahead and try to do well in Class XII. The dependence on board results for further studies is gradually coming down,” said Amita Prasad, director, Indus Valley World School.

Five students of Class XII and two of Class X have applied for improvement tests in the school.

In Birla High School, five Class XII students have opted for the tests.

In Sushila Birla Girls’ School, no one has applied.

In Delhi Public School Ruby Park, 20 Class XII students have applied.

In Mahadevi Birla World Academy, one Class X student has applied.

At South Point, the number of students applying for improvement tests is miniscule given the total number of examinees, an official of the school said.

“Many Class XII students write competitive exams and their performance in those exams carries more weight than board results. They prefer to move on,” said Anjana Saha, principal, Mahadevi Birla World Academy.

“In our school, only 3 per cent of Class XII students have opted for improvement exams,” said Joyoti Chaudhuri, principal, Delhi Public School Ruby Park.

Some students want to appear for an improvement test because it might help them cross a cut-off they have missed.

In Mahadevi Birla World Academy, the sole examinee who has applied for a Class X improvement test has done so because the student was not eligible for the science stream in Class XI.

“If the criterion for science is met after the test, the student will get a chance. But the result has to come before the registration for Class XI is completed,” said a school official.
