The University of Bath has opened its applications for the Professional Doctorate in Health for those looking to begin their studies in the academic year 2024-25. A professional doctorate is at an equivalent level to a PhD, but in a professional context, combining taught modules with a research phase.

This course is designed for professionals with experience in the health, sport, and social care fields who are looking to develop their knowledge and skills as practitioners and researchers. The part-time distance learning format includes an annual online summer school, enabling students to learn in a flexible environment without taking a full career break. They will learn about research methods and conduct independent research in their practice area while developing policy, practice, and systems knowledge. Students can also take part in doctoral skills workshops to build and develop their research skills.

Application Deadline: July, 2024

The session will commence in October 2024 and the application deadline is in July 2024

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates should typically have a Bachelor's degree, in an appropriate subject, with a final overall result equivalent to a First or a 2:1. Due to the number of different grading scales in use, candidates should upload a copy of the grading scale used by their institution, along with their transcript, when they submit their application. Candidates must also be doing a practice-based role working in a health, social care, education, clinical, or medical context, and are expected to have at least 1 year’s experience in their field. Candidates should also submit a professional reference from their employer or manager demonstrating their capability, detailing how the Professional Doctorate in Health will aid their professional development and that they will be able to meet the time requirements for their studies. Academic references may also be submitted in addition to the professional reference.

The English language requirements are a minimum of either a 7.0 IELTS score with no less than 6.5 in all components, a Pearson Test of English Academic score of 69 with no less than 62 in any element or a TOEFL IBT score of 100 overall with a minimum of 24 in all 4 components. Students who have graduated within the last 5 years from an Indian university where the medium of instruction is English, and achieved at least 75% for English in their Indian 12th Standard examinations, may be able to submit evidence of this instead. Other accepted language qualifications are detailed on the University website.

Fees Structure:

Developed by the Department for Health, the annual course fees for students starting in 2024 are £8,400. Students will have between 3 and 8 years to complete this part-time distance learning course and should budget for an annual fee increase of around 5% for each year of study.

Graduates of this course can expect to be able to apply their newfound knowledge, skills and research capabilities in relevant areas of their professional practice. They will also benefit from networking with their peers in the course’s multi-professional community.
