The University Grant Commission (UGC) has asked higher education institutions (HEIs) across India to conduct activities that highlight the health benefits of yoga on International Yoga Day (IDY), to be celebrated across the world on June 21.
In a letter to the vice-chancellors of universities and principals of colleges on March 25, Rajnish Jain, secretary of UGC, said, “As the countdown to IDY-2022 has already begun, the universities/ institutions may chalk out an activity plan for the coming days. It is aimed to bring more people into the fold of the activities of IDY-2022 by spreading the benefits of yoga.”
A reminder has been sent out to the universities and colleges to share the plans and details of the activities to be held.
Earlier, UGC had suggested a few activities for the institutions. It asked institutions to follow the Common Yoga Protocol on June 21 from 7am to 7.45am, followed by a suitable and befitting programme on yoga by students of all universities and colleges.
It also directed HEIs to organise yoga related activities such as lectures, workshops, training programmes etc. by inviting yoga experts. Additionally, yoga attire, yoga mats, caps etc. carrying the logo of IDY will be distributed by the institutions to the employees and students to practice yoga.
UGC stated that a few competitions on yoga may also be organised to build interest in the students/staff. Institutions have been asked to set up permanent yoga facilities and plan long-term yoga activities.
UGC has asked the institutions in the reminder letter to encourage active participation of students, teachers and parents on International Day of Yoga 2022.
