The Tripura government has approved the setting up of a Buddhist university in Manu Bankul, Sabroom.
Nripendra Chandra Sharma, director of higher education, Tripura, has sent a Letter of Intent to the Bahujana Hitaya Education Trust for setting up the university.
Bahujana Hitaya Education Trust, a Tripura-based publicly charitable organisation, will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for building necessary infrastructure at the proposed site at the earliest.
Students from 31 countries will get an opportunity to study and research Buddhist literature, culture and tradition at the proposed university. The Tripura government also plans to establish medical, technical and general degree colleges at the university.

The government will bring a bill in the Assembly for setting up the university once necessary facilities are built.
Sabroom MLA Sankar Roy said a 25-acre plot has been allotted to the Buddhist organisation to set up the university and the foundation stone of the project will be laid within a month or two.
Tripura at present has three universities — Tripura University, which is a central university, the state-run MBB University and privately-owned ICFAI University.
There are in total 22 colleges in Tripura which are under these varsities.
The International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) also looks forward to the university aiming to attract students from South East Asian countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Sri Lanka.
