Phaag collection celebrates the festival of colours using textile waste, draws inspiration from vibrant attire worn by artisans in Rajasthan
The Design Village, Noida, has been selected to exhibit its Phaag collection at the 60th edition of the Salone del Mobile Milan Fair — an annual furniture carnival in Italy touted as the largest trade fair of its kind in the world.
The Design Village is one of the only two Indian colleges selected to showcase its collection at the fair, out of 300 institutes chosen from around the world. The Milan fair is expected to be held in April 2022.
Phaag is a project by Sachin Choyal, a master’s student of Fashion and Textile Design at The Design Village. Phaag celebrates the Indian festival of colours using textile wastes. It draws inspiration from the vibrant attire worn by artisans and women in Rajasthan.
Choyal had positioned his master’s dissertation around the uplift of craft clusters. What started off as a mapping of sustainable practices of using pre- and post-consumer textile waste within rural communities of Haryana soon developed into a study of multiple aspects of sustainability itself.
“My goal is not only to increase the lifespan of the material which otherwise just goes to landfills but also to generate livelihood for the rural handloom weavers, especially the women artisans who are not allowed to work outside their home,” Choyal said.

The Salone del Mobile Milan Fair exhibits the latest furniture and global design trends every year. The event is considered a leading venue for showcasing new products by designers, whether it is furniture, lighting or other home furnishings.
A team of The Design Village (TDV) students participated in SPOIL - (Sustainable Packaging for Oil) projects as finalists at the Biodesign Challenge Summit 2021 and became the first South Asian Institute to participate and win two prizes at the Biodesign Challenge.
A total of 52 teams from 20 countries joined the summit, of which The Design Village’s project team and the mentors were awarded the Community Choice Prize and the Outstanding Instructors prize respectively.
The Design Village offers UGC-recognised undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. The institute is founded through a collaboration of Indian and European designers, enabling a vibrant faculty network.
The Design Village is an interdisciplinary, industry-centric design institute which organises meaningful faculty and student exchanges with international institutes and organizations. The institute works closely with the industry and professionals to maintain a strong focus on the real-world relevance and application of design.
