Sukanti Majhi, a tribal girl born to Ghasiram Majhi in Dhananjaypur village of Jhumpura block under Keonjhar district, Odisha, lived a life of struggle. Father Ghasiram Majhi was a daily wage earner with a paltry income who struggled to meet the basic needs of the seven family members, let alone educate his five children.

Ghasiram’s eldest son and daughter pursued their primary education at a local primary school. When financial hardships forced Ghasiram to abandon all dreams of educating the children in a good school, a relative told him about the opportunities and facilities of education with free food and shelter at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar.

KISS was founded by educationist, social activist and philanthropist Achyuta Samanta in 1992-93. After more than three decades of glorious journey, Samanta doesn’t require an introduction. After negotiating arduous early years, he has become a great rallying point for people at home and abroad.

KISS stands out like a symbol of Samanta’s tenacity and determination. Currently, he is a Lok Sabha MP. Besides education and tribal uplift, healthcare and rural development, he has contributed immensely to art, culture, literature, film, media, society and national integration. His contribution to the field of sports requires a huge canvas to list its rise and expanses, right from the grassroots to international podiums. The enormity of the man can hardly be elaborated on paper.

Besides KISS, he also founded Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT). Both educational institutions have achieved global repute and recognition. KIIT is an Institution of Eminence and one of the most prominent universities in India and globe for professional education having more than 30,000 students from all over India and 65 other countries. KISS is a home for 60,000 indigenous children, absolutely free.

Sukanti was admitted to Class I at KISS in 2014 and continues her journey as a disciplined student. She slowly adapted to the new environment and drew inspiration to nurture big dreams in her life and give shape to them. She is influenced by the love and affection of her peers, her mentors, her tutors, and teachers, and above all the inspiring words and benevolent blessings of Achyuta Samanta, who has motivated and encouraged her to scale great heights in her career.

Sukanti is at present in Class VIII. She has varied talents and actively participates in all activities on campus, including leading the peers both in class as well as in the hostel. Her disciplined style and leadership skills have appealed to teachers and mentors.
