A phase-IV clinical trial was conducted by researchers at Chitkara College of Pharmacy. Ravinder Singh, Thakur Gurjeet Singh and their team conducted the study on a group of 100 diabetic patients.

The team divided the subjects into two groups and conducted double-blind trials on them. One group was given the allopathic medicine Sitagliptin. The other group was given ayurvedic medicine BGR-34. The subjects were not aware of which medication they were being administered.

The subjects were monitored for a few days to collect the required data. The data showed that ayurvedic medicine was more effective in treating diabetes. This was proven as the group that was administered ayurvedic medicine has lower blood sugar levels and had improved functioning of Beta cells in the pancreas as compared to the group that was administered the allopathic medicine.

Results of the first round displayed a decrease in the baseline level of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). At the start of the study, the baseline value of HbA1c was 8.499%. After four weeks, the value for patients who took ayurvedic medicine was 8.091%. At eight weeks it was recorded to be as low as 6.56% and by 12 weeks it was 6.27%.

Random blood sugar tests further proved the effectiveness of the ayurvedic medication.

The ayurvedic medicine BGR-34 is a formulation developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research's labs - National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) and Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP). The medication is marketed by Aimil Pharmaceuticals.
