The chilly winter evening at Kolkata was filled with ardor as author, educator and philanthropist Mrs Sudha Murty took centre stage in front of an enthralled audience as the Chief Guest for The Telegraph Online Edugraph 18 under 18 Awards, 2024.
Addressing the heedful audience at the auditorium of South City International School, Kolkata, she recognised the importance of parents in the upbringing of a child and advised them to devote enough time in understanding their needs and difficulties.
In a candid chat with renowned psychiatrist Dr Jai Ranjan Ram, Mrs Murty also advised parents not to impose their unfulfilled dreams on children and give them enough space to grow as individuals.
"These days, children go through a lot of worries. Spend time with your children. Find out the worries and difficulties they are facing and bring about their solutions," she said.
"Most parents want to achieve their unfulfilled dreams through their children which is wrong. They have their own life and they should run their own marathon," said the Padma Shri awardee.
Not only success, she asked parents to teach their children to accept failures.
"Repeated success makes a person arrogant. A good amount of success and good amount of failures are essential in life. This makes you mature," advised Mrs Murty.
"Don't compare your child with others. Children should have the confidence to tell their parents about their failures. Children should have that freedom. Parents should spend time with their children to find out the difficulties they are going through," she added.
She also advised parents to practice the values and qualities they want to imbibe in their children.
"Parents are the role models for children. They always tend to imitate their parents. So if you want to imbibe certain values and qualities in your child, start practicing them. Only then, they will inculcate the good habits," she said.
The Telegraph Online Edugraph 18 under 18 awards were held on Wednesday, January 24, at the auditorium of South City International School in Kolkata. Eighteen meritorious students were recognised at the award ceremony for their brilliant achievements in various categories.
