Renault Nissan Technology and Business Centre India Private Limited (RNTBCI) launched a scholarship programme at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. The programme will benefit students pursuing BSc in Programming and Data Science from IIT Madras.

The inaugural ceremony for this scholarship was attended by Debashis Neogi, managing director, RNTBCI, Ramakrishnan Ramanathan, vice-president, Renault Quality and Head CSR, Prathap Haridoss, dean (academic courses), IIT Madras and Andrew Thangaraj, coordinator, IIT Madras BSc Programme.

RNTBCI, through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), will be providing financial assistance to 100 students who are from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue the BSc in Programming and Data Science from IIT Madras.

Drawing attention to the importance of education, Neogi said, “The right education at the right time is crucial for any student. At RNTBCI, we encourage social commitment through our endeavours in various community development initiatives through CSR activities. The importance of data science is evident in almost every aspect of life and with absolute certainty, we could say that the boundless potential of the students will be harnessed at IIT Madras, developing them into a significant resource for the industry.”

IIT Madras introduced a BSc course in Programming and Data Science in 2020 as the first-ever online degree by an IIT, spearheading the democratisation of high-quality education in India. The course has been designed to cater to candidates from all educational backgrounds and located anywhere in the world. The programme is very attractive for learners who are interested in building a career in the highly sought-after disciplines of data science and programming.

The program is offered three times a year and attracts learners worldwide. For admissions to the January 2022 term, the applications window is open until December 21, 2021. Appreciating the efforts behind this scholarship programme, Thangaraj said, “We have students from various backgrounds who are in need of financial assistance. The scholarships from RNTBCI will help them to achieve their goals, which would have been impossible otherwise. We are delighted to partner with RNTBCI to support the students studying BSc in Programming and Data Science.”

Through this course, students, irrespective of their age, academic or socio-economic background, learn the most in-demand skills of the 21st century from IIT Madras. With multiple entries and exit options, the course provides the desired flexibility for students as well as working professionals to earn a diploma/degree from IIT Madras.

Highlighting the importance of the programme, Haridoss added, “We now see a growing demand for data science and analytics skills. In the BSc program, we have seen students learn the basics of data science, and working professionals, with years of experience, expand their knowledge. There is a drastic shift in every field from business operations to consumer behaviour which requires expertise in data science. Analytics, data science and programming skills are now essential tools across industries which, in turn, makes our students a valuable resource.”

RNTBCI scholarships bear the enormous potential to initiate changes in the lives of students. This unique virtual learning programme is offered in three different stages - foundation level, diploma level and degree level. With 8,700+ students at the foundation level and 1,100+ students at the diploma level, this scholarship initiative will cater to the most eligible students of this programme.
