“I prefer liberty with danger than peace with slavery.”~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau
A previous lecture arranged by the Philosophy Club of Calcutta at Presidency University
The forthcoming session, as the theme suggests, will dissert on the intellectual contributions of writings by French theorists from the Age of Enlightenment to French postmodernism. Prof Md Inamur Rahaman, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Presidency University will deliver a lecture on ‘Rousseau on Social Contract’. Dr. Swati Chatterjee will follow up with the next lecture on ‘Foucault Panopticon’. The event is ‘Open to All’ and will begin at 5:30 pm. The audience will engage in Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s work on ways to preserve human freedom in 18th‑century French society. The programme also contains a critique of the inbuilt system of control on medical and sexual practices, and the entire praxis of knowledge by Michel Foucault.
This Club seeks to be a platform for the city of Calcutta to revitalise its culture of debate and discourse, thereby making serious philosophical conversations accessible in the City of Joy.
