New Delhi-based Indraprastha Institute of Information and Technology (IIIT) has welcomed underprivileged students on its campus for a month-long summer camp held in offline mode after a gap of two years. The summer camp began on May 23 and will conclude on June 18, the institute said in a statement.

Students from local government schools such as Government Boys’ Senior Secondary School (GBSSS) Harkesh Nagar and GBSSS Kalkaji have been invited to attend the summer camp.

Ranjan Bose, director of IIIT Delhi, welcoming the participants at the inauguration of the camp, said "We are delighted to have each one of you here on campus, physically. This summer camp is going to be a fun journey where you can learn a lot. Our students who have organised this summer camp have put a lot of time and effort into giving this summer camp a fresh and revamped look. IIIT-Delhi had organised the summer camp last year as well, however, due to the pandemic, it was done in a virtual mode."

R Alice Vaz, secretary, Directorate of Training and Technical Education, was the chief guest at the inaugural event. Addressing the students at the inauguration, she said, "I feel elated to be part of the sixth edition of IIIT Delhi's Summer Camp 2022. Education is important and you all know that the government of NCT of Delhi is striving to achieve excellence in education. However, building confidence and aspiration is more important to know the importance of education. I appreciate IIIT-Delhi for curating such a wonderful activity and especially all the student coordinators from the past to think about such a unique camp."

At the camp, students will experience skill-enhancing and academic learning sessions on different subjects along with hands-on sessions in science, math, entrepreneurship, life skills, and communication and personality developments. Activities like theatre, arts & crafts, reading & writing and product development & selling will also be organised with the aim of personality building and knowledge enhancement of the students.

IIIT-Delhi has been organising these learning camps for students from nearby government schools every year since 2016. Building the students’ confidence and aspirations by developing and enhancing their skills in communication, logic & aptitude, general science and entrepreneurship is the aim of the camp. Volunteers at the summer camp use a mix of conventional and out-of-the-box courses to impart knowledge and skills to the children over a course of four weeks.

Highlighting the objectives of the summer camp, Bose said, "This summer camp will teach you skills that you may not learn in day-to-day life. There are three main objectives of this camp – to inculcate self-confidence, learn how to work in teams for which the most important aspect is to respect each other, and curiosity to gain knowledge and skills in whatever way you can, not just from the academic subjects, but also from the other skills which you will learn here such as entrepreneurship, art & craft, reading & writing, and theatre."

Speaking about the various programmes established by the Delhi government, Vaz said, “Giving back to society always gives satisfaction, and here I would like to mention that we have introduced a mentorship programme being run by our state university. I am happy that IIIT Delhi is also a part of that activity and is now organising summer camp in line with the objective of this programme. This camp covers art & craft, life skills, theatre and much more which will make you self-confident and motivated learners."
