National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar celebrated National Science Day 2022 on February 28 to commemorate the remarkable work of Indian physicist Chandrasekharan Venkata Raman in the field of light scattering, popularly known as the Raman Effect.

The event was organised by the department of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Humanities and Social Sciences in association with the institution’s Innovation Council.

The event — launched by minister of state (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Earth Science Jitendra Singh — had the theme, ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future’.

The inaugural ceremony was held in the Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika Auditorium of NIT Silchar in hybrid mode. Minister of state for Education Subhas Sarkar joined virtually as the chief guest. Radhakant Padhi of Aerospace Engineering, IISc Bangalore was also present virtually as the guest of honour.

In his address, Sarkar congratulated the institute and the organising committee for hosting the event. He spoke about the role of the institute in promoting awareness on Science and Mathematics among school students. He quoted C.V. Raman, and reminded all the participants about the glorious history of Indian scientists who have achieved universal acceptance through their knowledge and wisdom. He concluded by quoting Acharya J.C. Bose, saying that the mind is the greatest laboratory.

Various activities were lined up for the National Science Day 2022 celebration, including a science tour organised under the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (RAA) for students from 14 government schools that are currently being mentored by NIT Silchar.

The students of the schools got an opportunity to visit the laboratories of the institute and interact with the faculty of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Humanities and Social Sciences. The students were excited to visit the campus as well as the labs. Some experiments of Physics and Chemistry were demonstrated for the students to offer them an insight into simple scientific ideas.

Students interacted with the Mathematics faculty and engaged in a mathematical activity for building curiosity and interest towards the subject. There was a meeting between the mentors to prepare an action plan for development of the teaching-learning process of the schools in the district.

Additionally, there was a poster presentation session where research scholars of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry showcased their research and innovation output to the community. The participants interacted with the experts and shared valuable information regarding the cutting edge research that the students are undergoing in the institute.

There were four keynote speeches delivered by renowned academicians of the country on the occasion.
