According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), Maharashtra received the most applications from state boards in the last five years for the medical test NEET-UG. In terms of applicants, the Karnataka state board is in second place, followed by Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
More than 20.38 lakh people applied to take the NEET exam this year. In 2019, it was 14.10 lakh. According to statistics reviewed by PTI, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) produced the largest contingent of applicants for the country's largest entrance exam between 2019 and 2023.
The board that oversees the national Class 12 exams received more than 5.51 lakh applications this year. But when it comes to applications for NEET UG, Maharashtra tops the list of state boards. The Maharashtra state board received more than 2.57 lakh exam applications this year.
The qualifying entrance test for admission to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine, and Surgery (BAMS), and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programs is the NEET-UG. NEET-UG is also the prerequisite test for the Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS), Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS), and Bachelor of Sc (H) Nursing programs.
In more than 540 medical schools around the nation, there are more than 80,000 MBBS seats available. Since May 2019, the NTA has conducted the NEET-UG on behalf of the ministry of health and family welfare. NEET-UG was previously administered by the CBSE. This year, 11.45 lakh of the 20.38 lakh applicants passed the test, an increase of 48% from the previous year.
According to the NTA, Uttar Pradesh had the most qualified candidates (1.39 lakh), followed by Maharashtra (1.31 lakh), and Rajasthan (more than a lakh).
