Sanjay Kumar is appointed as the new secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education. He was previously secretary of the Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Anita Karwal, who held office from 28 November 2020, to 28 November 2022, was replaced by Kumar.

After officially taking over, Kumar met with senior ministry officials and assessed the operation of the department, along with autonomous organisations and numerous school education-related programmes. In addition, discussions about the NEP 2020's implementation were place. The conference also included discussions on the development of teacher capacity, school infrastructure, and the impending Prime Minister's interaction programme, "Pariksha Pe Pariksha."

On Twitter, Kumar posted, "I started today as secretary, department of school education and literacy, EduMinOfIndia. All the best to the retiring secretary smt. Anita Karwal.” Additionally, Kumar held the position of Bihar's principal secretary for education. He is an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) from the 1990 batch.
