Six students of Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata, have been learning about cross-cultural perspectives and working on issues of human interest as Global Ambassadors for Felsted School, the UK.

The girls took Daniel Emmerson, director of global education at Felsted School, on a tour of Kolkata on the last day of his four-day trip organised by Think Education, which develops programmes, projects and partnerships in the education sector.

Global Ambassadors are selected from every school to lead the different activities. Representing India are the six Modern High School students —Anvita Ghosh, Debashmi Chakraborti, Dhwani Bachhawat, Meher Paul Mehmi and Sanjana Mittra of Class X and Ishana Kandhari of Class IX.

“The girls are high-spirited and motivated. They are doing a great job as Global Ambassadors. We are together planning for our next symposium in December. We also had a panel discussion on November 25 where the girls organised and led the discussion very well. I was highly impressed,” Emmerson said.

The girls took Emmerson to Prinsep Ghat, Currency Building, Victoria Memorial and St Paul’s Cathedral with a lunch break at 6 Ballygunge Place.

Meher, the vice-president of Global Ambassadors, was excited to meet Emmerson. “We wanted to show Daniel around Kolkata and make him taste Bengali food. Felsted School has taught us the importance of exchanging cultures. So today we are trying to give him a glimpse of Bengal,” said the Modern High student.

The girls had a hearty chat with Emmerson over piping hot luchis, alur dom, alu posto and more. They took care to explain to him the ingredients used in each dish.

The next Global Studies Symposium is scheduled to be held in December, where students will discuss climate change, global literacy and gender identity, among other things.
