The government has raised the number of medical schools, which has led to more MBBS seats. The number of medical colleges has increased by 82% from 387 in 2014 to 704.
Additionally, there has been a 110% growth in MBBS seats from 51,348 in 2014 to 1,07,948 as of today, and a 117% increase in PG seats from 31,185 in 2014 to 67,802.
With a preference for underserved areas and aspirational districts where there are no existing public or private medical colleges, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for the "Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals," with fund sharing between the Centre and State Governments in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category States and 60:40 for others.
Three rounds of the Scheme saw the approval of 157 Government medical colleges in total. 101 medical colleges have received the Scheme's approval over the past five years.
22 AIIMS have received approval under the Central Sector Scheme for the establishment of new AIIMS. In 19 of them, undergraduate classes have already begun. To address the faculty shortage, DNB qualifications have been accepted for appointment as teaching faculty.
