The Department of Applied Geophysics at IIT(ISM), Dhanbad is organising a webinar on “evaluating the role of sedimentary basin geometry on Earthquake Ground Motions with Hybrid Earth Models on February 11. Patricia Persaud, the assistant professor at Louisiana State University, a renowned public research university based in Baton Rouge in the USA, will be the guest speaker.

“The webinar will delve on an overdue large-magnitude earthquake rupture on the southern San Andreas fault which will have severe impacts for residents of the densely populated Los Angeles area. Due to the lack of recent large earthquakes, seismic hazard estimates for the region are mainly based on hypothetical simulations of earthquake rupture that give estimates of the ground motion or shaking. One of the key ingredients in such simulations is an Earth model that is representative of the real geology and rock properties,” said the spokesperson of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

The spokesperson further said that Louisiana State University faculty’s research works improves the ground motion estimates in the region by applying newly developed approaches to update the standard Southern California Earthquake Center - Community Velocity Models used in earthquake hazard estimates by embedding basin models that include explosive shots.

“She will present her evaluation of this new generation of hybrid Earth models in the vicinity of the southern San Andreas fault in the Salton Trough. Their methodology can be applied to other regions to rapidly and cost-effectively improve earthquake ground motion modelling efforts even in earthquake prone areas of India and Jharkhand too,” said the spokesperson.

Incidentally, an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 on the Richter scale shook Singhbhum district of Jharkhand in October last year as recorded by the National Center for Seismology. stated. No loss of life or damages were reported.
