Lady KC Roy Memorial School, Ranchi, hosted an inter-school essay and painting competition for students of Classes VIII to XII in the run-up International Biodiversity Day, which falls on May 22.

The programme was jointly organised by the school and the Jharkhand Biodiversity Board.

Children were asked to paint on ‘A Common Future for all Living Species’ and asked to write essays on ‘Significance of Biodiversity for All Living Beings’.

Chief wildlife warden, Jharkhand Biodiversity Board chairman and principal chief conservator of forest (PCCF) Ashish Rawat as the chief guest at the programme. Shailaja Singh, member-secretary of the Jharkhand Biodiversity Board and special secretary of the forest department; and Anjana Suchita Tirkey, conservator of forests, Institute of Forest Productivity, Ranchi, were the special guests.

Students of 17 private and government schools took part in the competition. The winners of essay and painting competitions will be awarded at a function in Ranchi on May 22, which is observed as International Biodiversity Day.

The United Nations declared May 22 as International Day for Biological Diversity in 2000 to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

Addressing the students, Rawat, delved into the importance of conservation of biodiversity. “If the existence of human beings and the future of the coming generations have to be safeguarded, then it is pertinent that each individual has to take positive efforts in this direction from a practical point of view,” he said.

Rawat lauded the school management for helping create awareness among students.

The director of Lady KC Roy Memorial School, Pranav Roy, said students can become real agents for the conservation of environment and biodiversity. “It is important that such topics are included in the school curriculum,” ge said.
