A total of 79 students, including 49 girls, were conferred gold medals by Jharkhand governor Ramesh Bais at the 35th convocation of Ranchi University (RU) held recently at the varsity’s Aryabhatta auditorium in Ranchi.
Addressing the 24,000-odd students graduating from RU, Bais stressed the importance of including job-oriented courses in the curriculum in a bid to make students employable and job ready.
Calling Ranchi an “education hub” for the students of Jharkhand, Bais asked RU authorities to start more professional courses, claiming that it would also draw students from other states to Ranchi for higher studies.
“Such an environment of knowledge should be established in the university that students from other states should also have the intention to study here,” said Bais.
Ranchi, Bais added, should also become a destination for job opportunities and self-employment in the days to come, and students and academics should work to achieve this goal.
“Education does not end at getting a degree. In Indian education philosophy, the purpose of education is character building,” said Bais, adding that the journey for all the students graduating on the day has only begun.
Vice-chancellor of Ranchi University, Kamini Kumar lauded the efforts and dedication of girl students of the varsity. Girl students of the varsity, she said, have done better in academics than boys in the past five years.
“In Ranchi University, girls have won more gold medals than boys. Even in this convocation, out of 79 gold medals, 49 were won by girls,” she said.
Anjali Kumari, a student of Nirmala College, won the overall best graduate medal, while Shifa Afreen from the same college was a gold medal for her overall best performance in vocational courses.
Aastha Bhardwaj was awarded the overall best graduation in Arts, Jagriti Singh bagged a gold medal for her performance in Commerce. A total of 24372 degrees were conferred at the ceremony.
