The Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata has set up a hostel in Odisha on behalf of the Japan government. The facility is expected to benefit over 180 tribal girls of the region.
The hostel has been built at the cost of 99,640 US dollars with a grant from Japan, which was given to NGO Arun Institute of Rural Affairs (AIRA) on November 6, 2019, for implementation of the project.
An official release from the Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata said the project for the “residential facility for tribal girl students of Prabasini Educational Complex of AIRA in Dhenkanal, Odisha” is now complete.
Nakamura Ken, acting consul general of the Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata, has seen the new hostel virtually and is all praise for the work done. The project has been implemented with support from the Japan government through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme.
Apart from a two-storeyed residential building, the grant from Japan has been used to procure furniture and equipment for facilitating the education and training of tribal girl students of Prabasini Educational Complex in Kankadahad, Dhenkanal.
According to AIRA, almost 180 tribal girl students will directly benefit from the facility. Decent living conditions at the new hostel will help them study in a better environment.
The GGP scheme was initiated to assist local NGOs in developing countries to respond to various development needs in a prompt and complete manner, even though on a comparatively small scale.
The Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata has donated more than 4.7 million US dollars to a number of NGOs in four eastern states -- Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal -- for more than two decades to fight against various challenges at the grassroots level.
