Meritorious students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras coming from financially weak families will be eligible for scholarships from the Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID). The merit-cum-means scholarship programme will benefit students from low-income homes pursuing Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programmes.
POWERGRID has contributed Rs 10.5 crore towards the funding of the scholarship programme as a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The CSR funding by POWERGRID was the single highest contribution IIT Madras received in 2021-22.
Mahesh Panchagnula, dean (alumni and corporate relations), IIT Madras; and V.K. Singh, director (personnel), POWERGRID, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of IIT Madras director V. Kamakoti.
“IIT Madras’s motto is to be an ‘Institute for All.’ Initiatives like the BSc degree programme and scholarships for deserving students have made IIT Madras more accessible. The institute records its sincere thanks to POWERGRID. IIT Madras is also planning to expand such scholarships to all technical institutions across the country,” Kamakoti said.
Panchagnula thanked POWERGRID Corporation for the support. “They (students) are most deserving of this support since it is by sheer hard work that they have made it to this institution. Through this initiative, IIT Madras, as an inclusive institution, is glad to enable students—especially girl students, who need financial support the most,” he said.
Singh said the Power Grid Endowment scholarship demonstrates commitment to education and the future of upcoming generations. “I believe that this scholarship will make a real, significant impact on the lives of the benefitted students,” he said. “POWERGRID believes that scholarships can be one of the most direct ways to give back to the community. Due to increasing educational costs, students need financial assistance more than ever.”
The scholarship programme will also focus on providing female students from economically weak families with financial support to encourage more women scholars in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The initiative amplifies IIT Madras’s efforts toward becoming a more inclusive institute.
“This contribution from Power Grid Corporation of India is the single largest CSR funding that IIT Madras has received in the last financial year for providing scholarships to students. We are happy to deploy the same funding meaningfully, to support meritorious students in the EWS category,” said Kaviraj Nair, chief executive officer, Office of Institutional Advancement, IIT Madras.
