Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad has set up a skill development centre (SDC) for daily wage earners in the coal hub of Dhanbad and Jharia so that they can get meaningful employment opportunities.
The SDC was established under the able guidance of IIT(ISM) Dhanbad director Rajiv Shekhar. A committee comprising the institute’s faculty members -- Alok Sinha, Alok Kumar Das, Sukanta Das, Koushik Mondal, Rakesh Soni, Pratik Kumar, Arbind Singh and Rajan Choudhary -- was instrumental in setting up the SDC.
The course, comprising theory and practical classes, will be conducted every Saturday and Sunday. The total duration of each course is 30 hours.
Classes have started from November 13, with special emphasis being given on giving instructions in the simplest of language and providing hands-on training.
The centre is currently imparting training in trades such as plumbing to nearly 48 registered daily wagers; welding to 12 participants; machining to 37 participants; electrician skills to 39 daily wagers; and computer fundamentals to 95 participants.
According to IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, running the course over the weekends will ensure maximum participation from the daily wage earners as they would find it convenient to attend the classes without affecting their existing jobs.
The objective of this SDC is to develop skilled manpower that can contribute to the economic growth of the nation. Enrolling for the course will help the daily wage labourers earn their livelihood according to their capacity and capabilities.
The institute is under the process of signing an agreement with Jamshedpur-based Indo Danish Tool Room, (a government of India society established in 1991) for getting their instructors as well as certification for the said courses.
The course will result in a certification from IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and help the candidates for employment in their respective fields.
IIT(ISM) had organized its first computer awareness programme from June 25th to June 29, 2018 for all the surrounding places of Dhanbad, especially its five adopted villages of Lahbani, Dhaiya, Bhelatand, Bapunagar and Mandal-Basti at NLHC lab Computer Centre, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad.
