The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad and Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) have renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for strengthening the collaborative academic activities of the two institutions in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
AIST’s Artificial Intelligence Research Center (AIRC) and IIT Hyderabad inked an MoU on October 29, 2018. In the past three years, the cooperation led to many collaborative research projects and AIRC provided internship opportunities to many students of IIT Hyderabad.
IIT Hyderabad students worked on joint projects with AIRC on Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Mining, and other AI themes. The newly-extended MoU covers joint scientific and technological cooperation in areas including machine learning and probabilistic reasoning techniques for various data types and combinations of them.
“The cooperation between IIT Hyderabad and AIRC started in 2018 when the then director of IIT Hyderabad, Uday B Desai, visited Japan with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and signed the first MoU. Since then, AIRC has received researchers from IIT Hyderabad who have given speeches at AIRC’s international symposiums and exchanged research ideas with AIRC researchers. Based on the collaborative discussions, AIRC hosted five intern students whose works contributed to the progress of the joint research endeavours of the two institutions,” said Junichi Tsujii, director, AIRC.
The extension of the MoU will facilitate organising seminars, symposiums and other types of discussions. It will also provide co-guidance for interns from IIT Hyderabad participating in joint activities with AIRC and encourage scientist, staff, and researcher exchange programmes.
B S Murty, director, IIT Hyderabad, said, “Collaborations with institutes like AIST is a step in the right direction to establish a global centre of excellence for AI and ML at IIT Hyderabad and to serve the society well with its changing needs.”
AIST aims to create a global partnership with international academic and research institutions through its centres. As a hub for large-scale AI research, AIRC is collaborating with institutes and universities from around the world for building and promoting AI research communities.
“IIT Hyderabad is one of the pioneering academic institutes in the country especially in the field of AI and ML. We have gauged the importance of AI well in advance. We are the first to start an undergraduate (BTech) program in AI. We are also the first in the country to have a complete department of AI that offers BTech, MTech and PhD in AI,” added Murty.
IIT Hyderabad’s close relationship with Japanese organisations is creating a unique holistic educational ecosystem that offers interactive learning and cutting-edge research, a statement from the institute read.
