An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati professor and a Presidency College and IIT Kharagpur alumnus, has been recognised by Vigyan Prasar among 75 Scientists Shaping Today’s India.
Mandal, a professor at the Department of Biosciences & Bioengineering, School of Health Sciences and Technology and Centre for Nanotechnology, IIT Guwahati, finds mention in a coffee-table book titled 75 under 50: Scientists Shaping Today’s India. The book published by Vigyan Prasar was released by Union minister Jitendra Singh on National Science Day.

The book is about the personal lives and professional accomplishments of 75 Indian scientists, providing an in-depth look at the diversity surrounding them, such as their differing backgrounds, reasons for becoming scientists, obstacles they faced, and their work in different disciplines.
Mandal has been working in the domain of “regenerative medicine and tissue engineering”, a highly interdisciplinary translational research domain that deals with the body’s ability to repair, heal and regenerate. This field has tremendous applicability being directly associated with human health, welfare and has the potential to contribute towards addressing organ shortage. His team has so far published 160 highly cited high-impact research articles in prestigious journals, filed 23 patents, and licensed three technologies with one product in the market.

It makes me happy that our contributions have made an impact to strengthen this domain of research inspiring many more to join hands in coming time. I would like to sincerely thank IIT Guwahati and the government of India for all the resources, encouragement and support in pursuing our dream,” Mandal said.
Born in Purulia district of West Bengal, Mandal graduated from Presidency College), Kolkata, and completed his master’s from the Department of Biotechnology, HP University, Shimla. He obtained his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and post-doctorate from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Tufts University, Boston, US.
Mandal is at present associate dean, academics (undergraduate), at IIT Guwahati.
