IIT Bhubaneswar has started welcoming its first-year BTech and Dual Degree students for the 2021-22 academic session.
A total of 472 students, 90 of them women, were offered admission on November 20 after the sixth and last round of counselling by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA).
Students under 18 (around 29%) can choose between online and offline classes.
As many as 226 students (182 boys and 44 girls) have reported on campus till November 22. Fifty per cent of the students who reported on campus are fully vaccinated, 27% have got the first dose and 23% are yet to be vaccinated.
“It is heartening to note that a majority of those under 18 who are yet to be vaccinated have also chosen to join the campus for education with physical presence. The IIT system is residential in nature and importance is given to peer learning, which is an essential component of creating tomorrow’s leaders,” IIT Bhubaneswar director Raja Kumar said.
IIT Bhubaneswar has been implementing COVID protocol in a spirited way. “Our campus is COVID-free at the moment and we could maintain it that way for the majority of the months during the pandemic. We will be able to take good care of those under 18 and vaccinate them too as and when they acquire eligibility as per the government guidelines. At the moment, all except for the third year BTech students, are on the campus and a majority of them have classes running with their physical presence,” Raja Kumar said.
Students have to produce a negative RT-PCR test report not earlier than 72 hours before arrival on the campus. They also have to be in 10 days’ quarantine in the newly built Rushikulya Hall of Residence.
“Classes for freshers will commence on November 26, first by online mode for a few weeks followed by hybrid mode thereafter and the academics for them for this year will be completed timely by June 2022,” said P.R. Sahu, dean of academic affairs at IIT Bhubaneswar.
The institute is planning to bring back third-year BTech students in December.
