Four proud and thankful alumni on stage and a fifth delivering a lecture virtually all the way from Chicago marked the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta on November 14.
The Distinguished Alumnus Awards were handed over to Sunil Kumar Alagh, managing director of SKA Advisors Pvt Ltd; Vallabh Sambamurthy, Albert O. Nicholas dean of Wisconsin School of Business; Srinath Narsimhan, chief executive officer of Tata Trusts; and K. V. Subramanian, chief economic adviser to the government of India. The institute has earlier honoured 64 of its alumni with the award.
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta celebrated its Diamond Jubilee on November 14 by felicitating four of its alumni.
Subramanian expressed his gratitude on receiving the award. “Let me start out by expressing gratitude to this enormous institution for not only providing me such a wonderful education but also making me part of a wonderful circle by bestowing on me this award. I genuinely feel very, very grateful,” he said.
Alagh, in his thanksgiving speech, addressed the students. “Happiness doesn’t come from how you live, but how you plan to die. Die in a manner that people remember you,” was his advice.
Narsimhan, too, had something to share with the current students. “I think in today’s environment opportunities are more in India as a country. The only limitation is how big your ambition is, how much you want to do things for yourself, so this is the time for this generation to come forward and put India on the global map. Do something that is a game-changer.”
The award turned Sambamurthy nostalgic. “It has been 40 years since I left IIM Calcutta. I am extremely humbled to join the battalion of others who won this award. Some of them are legends even before I joined,” he said.
Employees and staff members of IIM Calcutta were also awarded for their exemplary service to the institution.

The Diamond Jubilee lecture was awarded by IIM Calcutta alumnus Dipesh Chakrabarty. Chakrabarty, a professor of History, South Asian Language and Civilisation at the University of Chicago, spoke on ‘Business Education in the Anthropocene: Some Questions for our Times’.

The lecture was followed by an interactive session. Akash Agarwal, a second-year student at IIM Calcutta asked how countries around the country can prepare themselves before a pandemic hits the economy.
“Many virologists have stated that most countries seek a solution through global governance. The pandemic spread can be tracked down and the population is isolated. That’s a global approach,” Chakraborty replied.
