The International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) saluted the teachers of war-torn Afghanistan with the Teachers Peace Award 2021 on the occasion of International Teachers’ Day.
Thirty teachers from Afghanistan who showed courage and continued to educate children against all odds were honoured at a virtual award ceremony hosted by IIHM and the International Hospitality Council (IHC), London, on September 27. The theme of this year’s awards ceremony was ‘Because Teachers Make Difference’.
IIHM also announced that free English and Hospitality courses will be offered to students from Afghanistan. Efforts will also be made to help teachers in Afghanistan improve the quality of education in the country through various programmes.
Teachers from reputable institutions of Afghanistan received the award for their undaunted work in the ravaged country. Some of the teachers were from Shams London School, Ahmad Shah Abdali Private High School, Sofia Private School and Mushtaqbil-e-Naween Private High School.
“I am thankful to IIHM India for this wonderful event. Our school aims to nurture students for global environments with international quality education. The situation in Afghanistan is bad. As you know, there are also security issues but we did not stop teaching children,” said Saahil Siddiqui chief executive, Shams London School, and one of the recipients of the award.
Lima Oryakhail, a teacher at Shams London School, Taimani Girls’ Branch, said such programmes were important for Afghan teachers, especially in the current situation. “The Taliban instructed all female teachers not to teach boys. We have lost our motivation but this programme gave us hope. The teachers’ training programme is important for us as we will be able to exchange ideas,” she said.
Many others expressed their gratitude and said the programme had motivated them anew.
Suborno Bose, chairperson and chief mentor of IIHM, spoke highly of the teachers. “We salute the teachers of Afghanistan, who despite the difficult situation, have never let education stop even for a day. We are proud of each one of these teachers who has set an example to the world. They have proved that no force can stop education,” he said. “The teachers of Afghanistan are role models for students. They can influence young people and it is a great honour which IIHM and IHC are giving to the teachers of Afghanistan.”
