Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bilaspur in June, Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur has confirmed.
Speaking to the media in Hamirpur on February 3, Thakur said that Modi may inaugurate the fully-functional AIIMS in Bilaspur in June. The autonomous medical institute has been set up under the Union ministry of health’s Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna.
The outpatient department of AIIMS Bilaspur had been inaugurated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Jagat Prakash Nadda in December 2021.
The Himachal Pradesh CM informed that six government medical colleges and one private medical college are currently functional in the state. Thakur was speaking to reporters during a visit to the construction site of Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College (RKGMC) in Hamirpur. He directed the authorities to ensure time-bound completion of the project.
Thakur said that this 250-bed medical college and hospital was slated to be completed by August this year. On completion, it would provide modern healthcare facilities to the people of the region, he added.
Construction work in medical colleges at Nahan, Chamba and Hamirpur has been going on in full-swing and efforts are being made to complete them by September, said Thakur.
The chief minister also said that during his recent Delhi visit, he met Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya and urged him to provide additional funds for these projects so that they can be completed in time. All the medical institutions will provide world-class medical facilities to the people of the region, he added.
AIIMS Bilaspur is proposed to be a 750-bedded hospital with 15-20 super-specialty departments equipped with modern facilities. In a bid to further enhance healthcare delivery, the institute is likely to widen the spectrum of services through the expansion of departments in subsequent phases to provide affordable and reliable tertiary level healthcare in Himachal Pradesh as well as the adjoining states of Punjab and Haryana.
Pramod Garg — a professor at the department of Gastroenterology and Associate Dean (Research) at AIIMS, New Delhi — had been nominated the first president of AIIMS Bilaspur in March 2020. The medical institute began its first academic session from January 12, 2021, with a batch of 50 MBBS students.
