According to government sources, the number of postgraduate (PG) seats would be equal to the number of undergraduate (UG) seats in an effort to alleviate the shortage of specialised doctors in the nation. They claimed that the administration had set a goal of three years to close the deficit while maintaining the calibre of the courses.
According to an official, this will be accomplished by implementing Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses in both private and district hospitals. Government statistics show a significant increase in medical colleges since 2014.
As of now, there are 654 medical colleges, up from 387 in 2014, according to Bharati Pravin Pawar, state minister for health, who had testified before the Rajya Sabha in February. The number of MBBS seats has expanded by 94%, from 51,348 in 2014 to 99,763 in the present, while the number of PG seats has climbed by 107%, from 31,185 in 2014 to 64,559 in the present.
To satisfy the need for doctors in the nation, according to Pawar, the government has doubled the number of medical colleges and added additional MBBS seats.
