Calcutta University (CU) has secured the top spot among all state-run universities in the country in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022, ranking the third among all the universities in India.
Delhi University (DU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) -- both central universities -- have bagged the first and second places respectively among the Indian universities.
CU vice-chancellor Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee confirmed the news to the media on November 3, saying, “I got the information after the 2022 ranking, released by QS Rankings on Asian Universities, was out. We have to carry on the good work in academics.”
The Kolkata varsity has secured the 154th position among universities in Asia, while DU has taken the 77th position. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) have all ranked within the 100-200 bracket this time.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has been billed the top Indian institute in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022 and has ranked 42 worldwide.
A total of 118 Indian universities feature in the 2022 rankings — the second-highest for a country after Mainland China’s 126 universities. Moreover, India has taken the main share of new entries with 12 universities being ranked for the first time.
The QS Asia University Rankings 2022 were released on November 2, with the National University of Singapore (NUS) coming first in the list, followed by Peking University and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) which secured the second and third ranks respectively among all Asian universities.
Under this ranking system, the universities are ranked across 11 parameters including academics and employer reputation, the number of staff having PhD, the student and faculty ratio and the proportion of students from abroad among several other factors.
The first rank-holder in the World University Ranking 2021, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, has ranked 56 in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022. Of the 18 nations, territories and special administrative regions that make up the Asian rankings, India has the highest number of top-100 universities in the staff with PhD indicator, taking up 40% of the places. Indian universities have 34% of the top 100 spots for research papers per faculty. However, only six Indian institutions from India have the impact of the research produced and are among the top 100.
