The Assam government on Tuesday inaugurated a free spoken English app for school students in the state that will enable them to learn the language using their smartphones. The Assam authorities have also been considering a hybrid model of study where subjects like science and mathematics will also be partially taught via a mobile application and in English.
The education minister Ranoj Pegu has announced that the application will allow teachers to instruct, assess and give marks, using the app itself. Education Adviser of the state, Mr Nani Gopal Mahanta was also present at the launch.
As per sources, the maintenance of the application will be looked after by the Board of Secondary Education Assam (Seba). A Guwahati based start-up, Trusnetix Technology Pvt Ltd has helped Seba in developing the application.
All class 10 students who are to appear for the board examinations next year will have to enrol themselves in the application. Thse students who do not have access to smartphones will, however, need to appear for the assessment tests in the offline mode.
As per the statement released by the education department, the major goal of the application is to help students be fluent in English communication as well as assist government run schools in introducing a hybrid model of classroom teaching, especially in English.
