West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) is all set to conduct the West Bengal Civil Service (Exe.) Preliminary Examination on Saturday, December 16 at different centres across the state. Through this examination, selected candidates will be recruited as Group A, B, C and D officers at various levels of the state government.
Exam Pattern
Candidates will have to answer a total of 200 questions from various topics including English language, General Science, History of India, Indian National Movement, Indian Polity and Economy, Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal and General Mental Ability. The examination will be held for a duration of two hours and thirty minutes.
The Telegraph Online Edugraph spoke to several experts who shared their opinion for aspirants.
"Candidates shouldn't study anything new during these two days. They should focus on revising whatever they have studied till now," said Subho Sinharoy (WBCS Exe.), Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector at East Midnapore district.
"Portions from Indian National Movement and Indian History should be the main focus as these two sections will carry 50 marks. They should try to extract maximum marks from these two portions," he added.
Anupam Chakraborty (WBCS Exe), Deputy Magistrate ad Collector, Katwa on the other hand said that aspirants should focus only on their strong areas in the last two days and should aim to achieve 150 marks to qualify for the Mains Examination with ease.
"In every question paper, there are three types of questions. The easy ones, which everyone can answer, the moderate ones, and the tough ones. Students, who will be able to answer the first and second category of questions will be able to qualify in the exam easily, while a few correct answers to tough questions will be an icing on the cake," said Chakraborty.
Subho Sinharoy also advised students to keep their cool while answering questions from logical reasoning and mathematics as they will require a lot of brainstorming.
Chakraborty on the other hand said that candidates coming from science background can answer questions Science and Mathematics easily. However, he advised the students from non-science background to focus more in answering questions from history, geography and general knowledge and attempt the questions from science at the end.
Commenting on the mental stress that the aspirants are currently going through, both the officers advised the aspirants to avoid any unnecessary stress on the last day before the exam.
"These two days are very vital. Candidates should not take any new stress during these two days. This may hamper their performance at the exam. Since this exam contains negative marking, they should avoid guess work in answering the questions in which they have doubt," said Sinharoy.
"They should eat light food and have proper sleep and relax during this time and revise whatever they have read," he added.
The Preliminary stage is a qualifying stage of the three-stage exam. Candidates will have to secure the cut-off marks (varies from year to year) to qualify for the next stage i.e. the Mains examination. The dates of the Mains examination will be announced by the commission in due course.
