The number of new medical colleges in the nation increased by 67% over the previous eight years to 261 new establishments, according to a report provided by the national government.

The total number of postgraduate medical seats increased by 105%, reaching 63,842, while the number of MBBS seats increased by 87% to reach 96,077. 3,877 additional MBBS seats have now been approved at 58 colleges located in 16 different states.

10,000 new MBBS seats would be created by the ministry in only government colleges. 72 medical colleges in 21 states or Union Territories have been permitted to add 4,058 more postgraduate seats in phase one. Phase two has seen the approval of 47 colleges, adding 2,975 more postgraduate seats in government medical colleges.

According to the report, the health ministry has launched initiatives to modernise 75 government medical institutions and set up 22 new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. In 19 of the 22 new AIIMS, MBBS classes have begun, adding 2,037 seats for undergrads.

A plan to give central funds for the establishment of new medical institutions was launched in 2014, according to the report. It stated that out of the 157 institutions authorised under the programme, 93 have started operating and another 60 are anticipated to do so during the next two years.
