Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that the state is going to have 24 medical colleges within the next five years. This will improve and better the healthcare domain in the state, making the availability of doctors more prompt and smooth.
The announcement came while signing an MoU with Bright Star Investments Pvt. Ltd for infrastructure development of the second medical college in Guwahati. He further informed that his government has the vision to set up one medical college in each district in Assam.
The state has existing nine medical colleges and in addition more 15 new medical colleges will be built. Out of the 15 medical colleges, 7 are being set up in Nalbari, Nagaon, Tinsukia, Charaideo, Kokrajhar, Biswanath Chariali, along with the second medical college in India.
"It is for the first time that the Assam government has collaborated with the private sector for building infrastructure for a medical college in the state,” the chief minister added.
The minister further informed that the government will be constructing five more medical colleges at Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Marigaon, Tamulpur and Dhemaji during this month, while work for three more medical colleges at Sivasagar, Karimganj and Goalpara will start soon.
