Jadavpur University has again written to the education department requesting that they be allowed to hold the annual convocation on December 24.
The university had written to education minister Bratya Basu on December 8 saying “it would be an act of injustice towards the students” if they could not be awarded degree certificates.
JU’s officiating vice-chancellor, Buddhadeb Sau, said since they have not received an approval from the department yet, a reminder has been sent.
Sau said students have threatened an agitation if the convocation is not held.
“We have not yet received any communication from the department in response to our letter. So, the university’s registrar has sent a fresh communication as part of a reminder,” Sau told Metro.
An official of the university said registrar Snehamanju Basu on Tuesday wrote
to Manish Jain, principal secretary in the education department, requesting him to grant permission for the convocation.
Registrar Basu wrote that degree-recipients are keen to know when the convocation will be held.
Education minister Bratya Basu told Metro in a text message on Wednesday: “We will soon decide on JU.”
“Barely 10 days are left for the ceremony. But we are not being able to make
any preparations as the approval has not come. We have to complete certain formalities like holding meetings of the executive council and the court before the convocation,” said the university official.
The impasse over holding the convocation surfaced in early November when the education department restrained the university from convening a meeting of the executive council citing that JU did not have a full-term vice-chancellor.
Sau was handpicked by governor C.V. Ananda Bose, the ex-officio chancellor of all state-aided universities, on August 20 as officiating VC, allegedly without consulting the state government.
